Serwus

Interview: 004 | Serwus

Serwus is our man this month. He’s still fairly new to the label but has a few releases under his belt with us. He’s got a knack for producing funky house, dance pop and more. Always high energy and high impact. He brings a bit of the mainstage to our otherwise underground sound – but yet… he still keeps it all on the downlow… or something like that.

And on that note, let’s get back to the program!

Until next time, keep it unique!

You’ve spent over a decade immersed in music—what was the spark that got you hooked and set you on this path?

My early musical landscape was shaped by the soulful sounds of R&B, the rhythmic energy of hip-hop, and the vibrant nostalgia of disco. But everything shifted in 2011 during an unforgettable two-week party excursion with friends through Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Ibiza. It was there that EDM became my gateway into the expansive world of electronic music. Though initially captivated by artists like Afrojack, my sonic palette broadened, and I found myself captivated by the enduring pulse of house, the hypnotic drive of techno, and the infectious rhythms of disco echoing within those iconic club walls.

You talk about “intuitive honesty” in your music—what does that mindset look like when you sit down to write a new track?

While initial inspiration can stem from a fleeting radio tune or a compelling sample, the true path of a track unfolds organically as I build its core. It’s not until the drums and bass lock in, or a central synth melody emerges, that the song’s ultimate destination becomes clear.

When you combine vintage textures with modern electronics, which classic sound or piece of gear do you always return to?

The piano holds an undeniable allure for me. Its sonic range is vast, capable of delivering both vibrant energy and profound beauty. Whether taking center stage or subtly enriching the sonic landscape, it’s an indispensable instrument. Beyond that, the addition of a funky guitar riff or a looping vintage vocal sample is often the perfect touch to inject character and a timeless feel.

You navigate both deep-club territory and nu‑disco/house‑pop—what factors help you decide which direction to take next?

My musical output is mood-dependent. Groovy vibes lead to Nu-Disco explorations, while a moodier state inspires immersive underground tracks. However, energy is always a core element – you won’t find me making anything slow.

Collaborating with vocalists adds a pop dimension to your tracks. How do you choose the right singer and vibe for a song?

I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with incredibly talented singers who have generously lent their voices to my tracks. Among them, Emiko Sylver stands out as a personal favorite, possessing a truly powerful and versatile voice. My typical workflow involves crafting the instrumental foundation first, at which point the ideal vocal timbre and style become clear. Occasionally, I’ll invite singers to topline demo lyrics, which can then evolve into incorporated “samples” or ignite entirely new song concepts.

What’s one moment on stage—whether a club, rave, or festival—that reminded you why you love performing live?

Nothing beats seeing people standing on the dancefloor with closed eyes, no phones and just enjoying the moment. That’s when I know they are locked in with the music.

You aim to create music “beyond the mainstream.” What’s one thing you hope every listener takes away from a Serwus track?

My greatest hope is that listeners discover something unique in my music that resonates with them deeply – a hidden gem they can return to and appreciate time and time again.
