Djordje Vorkapic

Interview: 003 | Djordje Vorkapic

Djordje Vorkapic is a relatively new artist to MK837. He’s a native of Serbia and largely produces techno, tech house and minimal / deep tech. His 2024 Rondônia State was one of my favorites from our label – especially his track Toro De Fuego. He’s had releases on PL&, Hush Deep, Feel Hype and more. With all that said, let’s jump into the interview.

Until next time, keep it unique!

What first sparked your passion for electronic music—and can you share how your very first rave experience set you on this 22‑year journey?

Well, love at first sight between me and electronic sound happened when I heard Daft Punk’s Around the World for the first time in 1997, I haven’t turned 9 yet. That tune really sent me out there and as far as I remember I felt something like: ”wow man, it must be so cool to create a feeling like this in people with music”.

How would you describe your sound in three words, especially considering your deep roots in the Serbian underground scene?

Uplifting, warm-blooded and movable.

Could you share your experience attending your very first rave in Serbia and the lasting impact it had on your musical direction?

I totally remember the day in the year of 2003, I haven’t turned 15 yet, when I was in high-school and one girl approached me with words: ”hey mate, wonna go to this party, I have an extra ticket”. And me, always open for some adventure and for diving into something unexplored, said without thinking for one second, ”Yes”. It was written on the ticket Jody Wisternoff, about whom at that time didn’t know a thing. Now legend of Bristol electronic scene.

Which of the domestic techno pioneers (like Boza Podunavac, Vlada Janjic, or others) influenced you the most, and what did you learn from them?

Well, that would be probably Dejan Milicevic and Marko Nastic. They are not the oldest ones on the scene, but the closest to my rave-going and growing up period. I will never forget those beginnings and going to their parties. The atmosphere, energy, power, you just know without looking that one of those two took a turntable in his hands. So, two things that I took after them are power and recognition that it is me without reading the name of the artist.

How do you feel the vibrant rave culture in Belgrade and clubs like Barutana, Industrija, and Omen have shaped your approach to music and live performance?

Electronic scene in Belgrade shaped me to be an artist with whom you would always ask for one more and the artist who always seeks for improvement and changes in the creation, as the crowd here is super knowledgeable, knows what it wants and cannot be tricked with low-quality and repetition.

What does being part of MK837 mean to you, and how has the label supported your creative journey?

Means a lot to me, as the label is very professional, does its part in spreading the word and fully supports my creative decisions.

When you perform live, how do you connect

I have never performed live, but I played tracks that I found awesome and hoped that I would be able to transfer this satisfaction to the mass and that they would love them too. It never failed.

Can you share a memorable encounter with a fan that epitomizes the spirit of the underground rave vibe from your early days?

Yeah, it was 5-6 years ago in one club in Prague. After the performance a girl approached me with the following: ”Thank you so much for taking me back to the times when the rave was rave. Haven’t been there since 2000s”. That was a proof that I am doing something right.

What’s the one message or vibe you hope listeners take away from your music?

This is the ride that I will remember for the rest of my life.

How do you blend your long-standing love for electronic music with your ongoing evolution as an artist?

I believe the main source of being there and doing this is the music itself, what the music contains. Constant generator to do something you love and if you enjoy it why not someone else to enjoy it as well.
